These houses have a special place in the psyche of the seaside area. They were the choice through the generations as a place to live and holiday. While the beach house reflects the history of the area, they have been co-opted by a new generation of residents. These occupants see these older surroundings as more than a space to exist. It is a place that can express individual personality in a way that a new concrete and brick building cannot. In this way these buildings represent more than an old building.
A beach house combines a history, multiple contacts, and an architecture. Nostalgia. Its style is unique to the Gold Coast and begs to be preserved. These photos are small windows into this reality: stopping the notion that the new concrete, post-modern architectural building, is the dream. Indeed it may not be the ideal. This series was captured in 2009. Since then a few of the beach houses have been torn down and replaced by a modern day home.
